As part of New Hope’s vision to take the next steps in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and to have increased outreach to the world, we are doing our coffee shop a bit differently. All the proceeds from this coffee shop go toward local and global ministries we support. We believe in serving excellent coffee that has been responsibly grown and harvested, as well as using cups with the highest percentage of post-consumer content on the market. Reducing waste and paying a fair wage for responsibly grown and harvested beans is one way we can reflect the love of God, who created everything and who cares deeply for the poor and oppressed. Even small things can have a big impact.
We hope you enjoy your beverage as much as we have enjoyed crafting it for you.
The coffee at Holy Grounds comes from Café Femenino. They have an amazing story and an inspiring vision that we are excited to rally behind.
Gay and Garth Smith of Vancouver, Washington, who began importing and selling organic and fair trade coffees from around the world in 2004, founded the Café Femenino Foundation that same year. What they found in traveling to these remote coffee communities were women who had no voice in family decisions and no control of the family resources; essentially, the women had no rights-socially, politically, or economically. They were poor, uneducated, and living in isolation, all of which contributed to phenomenal rates of abuse. Though the Smiths no longer import coffee, they are still committed to the mission of helping families around the world through the Café Femenino Foundation.
The foundation is a 501 (c) 3 IRS-licensed non-profit. It is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff. All of the funds the organization raises, less operating expenses, go to fund grants that are submitted to the Café Femenino foundation each year. The foundation has funded all types of grants, including community gardens, animal breeding programs, health programs, sanitation programs, water projects, income diversification trainings, and nutrition trainings.
Café Femenino is not only making a difference in the level of poverty, but also in elevating the value of women in these remote communities. It is reducing abuse levels, as well as calling attention within our larger community to the plight of women in coffee communities.
