Born and bred in Virginia, John developed a deep love for the mountains and the ocean early in life. Originally flirting with the idea of becoming a lawyer, he later discovered a passion for ministry, went to seminary, and ended up in Madison, WI. After 17 years at Blackhawk Church serving in a variety of pastoral roles, John received the call to serve at New Hope.

Pastor of Worship Arts Community
Paul is a songwriter, worship leader, teacher, spoken word artist, and actor. His undergraduate degree is in theatre and music and he is almost done with a masters degree in theology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He moved to Portland from Madison, WI where he lived and worked for ten years. He is passionate about helping people connect their faith to everyday life and helping artists connect faith to art. His wife Mariah is a dancer and counselor; they have two daughters, Adah and Junia.

Pastor of Student Community
Matt serves and oversees the Middle School and High School Ministries. He is passionate about teaching youth the scriptures and what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus. Matt is a graduate of Multnomah University with a degree in Bible/Theology and Psychology. He loves coffee, basketball and golf. Matt and his wife, Christy, live in Clackamas with their daughter Elliot.

Women’s Community Director
As the Women’s Pastor, Carolyn is passionate about helping women discover how to grow spiritually through digging into the Bible in personal study and by gaining insights from other women either in a group setting or mentor relationship. She believes that each woman has the amazing assignment of making a difference in our world and that we accomplish that better together—hopefully with grace and humor! WOW Bible studies, mentoring, coffees, Holiday Marketplace… many venues, but one focus: Jesus and His love.

Jerry Schmidt, Pastor
Jerry provides leadership and management of New Hope’s finances, facilities and property, direction to facilities, personnel, and HR responsibilities. He also leads our 55+ Ministry and Pastoral Care Team, and assists the congregation in matters of charitable estate planning. Jerry and his wife, Jeanie, are one of New Hope’s founding “pioneer” families, having helped start the church in 1972. In his spare time, Jerry enjoys gardening, reading, golfing, watching the Blazers (when they’re hot) and most of all, spending time with his wife.

Database & Families in Crisis Coordinator
Trudy spends much of her time being the proud mother of two and grandmother of 5. A former Kaiser Permanente employee, Trudy has been a member of New Hope for over 30 years, and on staff for the last 8. In addition to volunteering within the Women’s Community, Trudy handles the ins-and-outs of our Families in Crisis Fund, and keeps things running smoothly within the church database. You will often find Trudy reading or spending time at the beach.

Weekend Experience Coordinator
As Weekend Experience Coordinator, Kellie helps organize all the behind-the-scenes technical and personnel details that make the Sunday morning services happen. She also leads the Visual Worship Team that runs our in-service graphic program, ProPresenter, and provides on-site technical support for assorted computer issues. Kellie and her pilot-husband, Bill enjoy travel, breakfasts out, and their 2 cats.

Kathryn is the Finance Manager (aka ‘Bean Counter’ – her favorites are the chocolate covered coffee beans!) She keeps New Hope’s accounts in order by tracking the faithful tithes and offerings of our partners and contributors, paying the bills and processing the payroll for our wonderful staff. She enjoys photographing God’s gifts of nature and writing as pastimes.

Life Groups Coordinator
Corinne moved from the frigid wasteland of Wyoming and arrived at New Hope in 1989 with her husband Todd, and her sons Andrew and Nathan. She loves gardening, and always has a good book or two going. She is passionate about creating sacred space through casual conversation, extended prayer sessions, small groups or large groups to hear more clearly.
She is certified as a coach through Western Seminary, is a NAMI Family to Family teacher, and holds a B.A. in both English and Psychology from Westmont College.

David & Cheryl Goetchius enjoy mountain biking, camping, their grandkids, dogs, God’s creativity and helping others. God brought them together at New Hope Recovery Ministry many years ago and now it is their joy to continue to grow and serve in this ministry.

Office Manager & Administration
Debbie has been the office manager for New Hope since November 2011, and has been an active partner of New Hope for over 15 years. She works with all outside rentals for the church (concerts, weddings, funerals, receptions, conferences, etc.). She also serves as Pastor Jerry’s assistant on the Administrative Team. Debbie has been married for 18 years to her husband, Dick and they live just outside of Oregon City. They have 4 children, 3 grandchildren and a very spoiled wirehair terrier named “Buster Brown”.

Director of Welcome & Connections
Hannah serves with the Hospitality Team at New Hope. Raised by school teachers here in Happy Valley, she deeply values learning, teaching, and the gift of getting to discover God together. Hannah graduated from George Fox Evangelical Seminary with her MA in Ministry Leadership and has particular interest in community care and spiritual formation. She lives in SE Portland and loves to experiment in the kitchen, play outside, and share life with friends and family.
Church Records Administrator
Barb’s “privilege”, as she puts it, is to update and maintain the individual names in New Hope’s congregational database so we have accurate information for each attendee. This greatly aids the Pastoral Staff and Ministries in contacting and connecting with the congregation. Also, Barb serves the Pastoral Care Team, keeping them aware of those who are facing crisis or health issues and need pastoral contact. From her office, the Praying for You Cards are written by volunteers and mailed out each week. “To serve the Lord and my church is my greatest joy in living.”

Andy Anderson has attended New Hope since 1993 and has served on the Session two prior terms before beginning his current term in January 2015. He owns and operates several small businesses in the area and has been active throughout the years in New Hope’s Children’s Ministry, Host Team and Men’s Ministry. He and his wife Linda have been married since 1989 and have four children, two of which still live at home. Originally from the Chicago area, he can’t imagine living anywhere but here in Oregon.

Bob Cymbala began serving his current term on the Session in January 2014. He owns and manages a commodity trading company. Bob’s passion in ministry is small groups, leading with his wife, Nancy, a 12-member community group. He earlier was active in New Hope’s choir and band, playing keyboard. Bob’s family members are almost all on the East Coast.

Cheri has served on Session since January of 2013. On a normal week, Cheri fills her time as a 6th grade Language Arts, Leadership and Study Skills teacher at Lakeridge Junior High in Lake Oswego. She is passionate about seeing where God is moving and join Him, caring for children and youth, and helping parents find love, fun and joy amidst the struggle of parenting. Cheri has been married to Kevin for coming up on 34 years, has three grown children, five grandchildren, one chocolate lab, three grandpuppies, and a myriad of young adults who have temporarily adopted her as family and transitioned to adulthood through her home.

Cheryl Goetchius began serving on the session January 2015 and has attended New Hope for over 25 years. She has worked at Kaiser Dental as the fee & benefit specialist since 1992. She and her husband, Dave, have been leading the Life Recovery Ministry since 2010 but have attended this recovery ministry for over 25 years. This is where her passion is – helping others grow from their struggle with their addictions & other harmful behaviors. Her other passions are the outdoors, mountain biking, camping, motorcycle rides, their grandkids, & dogs.

Clara began serving on the Session in January 2014. She joined New Hope in 1986 as the first Children’s District Pastor, which later became Family Life Pastor. All total, she has been in ministry in the area of Christian Education 35 years. Her deep passion is to assist parents & children in knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord and to embrace His teachings in their daily lives. She and her husband, who will soon celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary, retired 6 years ago and spent much of that time caring for his parents until their death last year. They enjoy their growing family which includes two children, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren, so far.

Christine has attended New Hope since 2011 when she walked through the doors and felt so very welcome from her first visit. She feels blessed by the wonderful small group family to which God brought her and, along with the group, served once a month at the Portland Rescue Mission for three years. During her first few months at New Hope, she participated in Starting Point and later became involved as a facilitator. She enjoys helping others find answers to their questions like she did as she began her walk with Jesus. After earning her bachelors degree and MBA with concentrations in human resources, Christine has worked in Human Resources management for more than thirty years in a variety of industries. Since 2003, she has worked with attorneys as the Director of Human Resources at the Oregon State Bar.

John and his wife Nancy came to New Hope in 2007, their first Sunday being the official “revealing” of the Eagle Landing project. They love greeting folks on Sunday mornings and connecting with guests; meeting visitors, and hearing their stories about what brings them to New Hope. John also enjoys serving on work crew outreach projects. In the past, John has worked as an ordained minister after receiving M.Div. from Western Evangelical Seminary (now George Fox Seminary), spent time employed by Gladstone School District for a total of almost 20 yrs supervising grounds maintenance/athletic fields, and has been married to Nancy for 38 years, with 2 sons (Aaron and Ryan) and 1 fabulous daughter-in-law (Joelle). His absolutely favorite hobby/pastime is GOLF!
